Thoughts on Evil Dead Rise (2023)
"Evil Dead Rise" is the latest installment in the Evil Dead franchise, directed by Irish writer-director Lee Cronin. It is a spinoff of horror franchise of the same name. It is a brutal and gnarly movie with a mix of scares and (some) levity. However, the tone is generally bleak and cruel, with a few dark jokes peppered in.
The movie follows a family being tormented by Deadites, and the kills are absolutely brutal. There is focus on the family aspect which created an interesting dynamic in the movie for me, though the movie still prioritized jumpscares and other horror tropes. But overall, I had a really good time, though I don't think is a horror movie that destined to be a classic (unlike movies like Hereditary or It (2019))
